Throughout the campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump talked about securing this country’s borders as well as restoring America’s military strength. Against this backdrop, the recommendation in the new Administration’s initial budget proposal to cut spending for the U.S. Coast Guard by more than $1 billion makes no sense. In fact, the Coast Guard needs more money in order to buy additional ships. The White House and Department of Homeland Security should consider buying more of its new Legend class high-endurance National Security Cutters. I have written about the need for a bigger and badder Coast Guard for Defense News here.
