GMD: The Only Program That Can Stop A North Korean Nuclear Warhead From Reaching America (From Forbes)

April 28, 2017May 1, 2017Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has made no secret of his efforts to obtain a nuclear strike capability against America.  That is a huge security challenge because Kim may not be deterrable in the way we believe Russian and Chinese leaders are.  Short of launching a military campaign, Washington’s only option is to deploy missile defenses off the U.S. homeland that can intercept North Korea’s warheads.  The Pentagon has a program capable of doing that called Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD), but it only gets about two hours worth of federal spending per year.  The Trump administration needs to bolster GMD with more interceptor sites, better radars, and other enhancements, because the cost is modest compared with the losses America would suffer if even one North Korean warhead were to explode above a major U.S. city.  I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
