Weapons Cuts In 2015 Budget Leave Soldiers, Marines At Risk (From Forbes)

February 24, 2014February 24, 2014Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

When the Obama Administration sends its proposed 2015 budget to Congress next week, two armored vehicle programs will be missing in action from the defense portion of the request — the Army Ground Combat Vehicle and the Marine Amphibious Combat Vehicle.  A year ago, the two services were describing their respective programs as top modernization priorities.  Now, a combination of budget caps and the unwillingness of Congress to support cuts in other activities has led to the virtual termination of both efforts.  If the two armored vehicle programs are not resurrected, it is nearly certain that soldiers and marines will die unnecessarily in future wars due to a lack of adequate mobility, protection and situational awareness.  I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
