Naked To Nuclear Attack: Democrats Hand The GOP A Winning Defense Issue For 2016 (From Forbes)

April 30, 2015Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

The GOP is struggling to regain the reputation it once enjoyed as the party that understands how to defend America.  One relevant issue that Democrats have handed Republicans on a silver platter is national missile defense, the ability to intercept ballistic-missile warheads approaching American soil.  That threat is the only way in which American civilization might come to a screeching halt in the near future, and yet Democrats can’t seem to think seriously about the fact that nuclear deterrence isn’t going to last forever.  If they did, it would be obvious an imperfect defense is far superior to none at all.  But because Democrats are stuck in a Cold War mindset on strategic defense, Republicans own the issue.  Many voters will be shocked to discover the U.S. has barely any defenses against a nuclear attack, and that the Obama Administration is spending dozens of times more on defending places like Afghanistan than it is on protecting Americans against the specter of nuclear war.  This could be a winning national-security issue for the GOP in the 2016 elections.  I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
