What’s New At The Reagan Defense Forum This Year? The Threat Of North Korean Nuclear Attack (From Forbes)

December 1, 2017December 7, 2017Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

The rapidly emerging nuclear threat that North Korea poses to the U.S. will likely be a topic of discussion at this weekend’s Reagan National Defense Forum.  A good place to start in figuring out how to respond would be to ask what the 40th president would have done.  It appears that President Trump’s approach to the North Korean threat is strikingly similar to the approach Ronald Reagan took with the Russians.  First, don’t be diplomatic, be direct in threatening consequences.  Second, back up the words with action, meaning military preparations.  Third, invest in missile defenses, particularly of the homeland.  Fourth, don’t be shy about asserting moral authority.  Finally, be ready to do a deal — even if you hate the people on the other side of the bargaining table.  I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
