Trump’s Embrace Of Space Force Could Transform How America Wages War (From Forbes)

March 14, 2018Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

President Trump confounded his defense advisors this week by embracing the idea of a Space Force to manage military activities in space.  Not a space command or a space corps, but a Space Force.  The president may be on to something.  Space isn’t just increasingly important to our security and increasingly contested by our rivals, it is a good place from which to influence events on Earth.  Good, that is, if the military leaders charged with overseeing defense activities there are thinking creatively.  There is reason to suspect they aren’t.  For all the talk of space being an emerging warfighting domain, the existing military services seem too preoccupied with their traditional domains to give space its due.  So maybe the nation needs a Space Force that can address space on its own terms, rather than as a place for supporting traditional approaches to warfighting. I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
