TRANSCOM’s Award of Household Goods Contract Risks Welfare of Military Families (From RealClear Defense)

January 1, 2022January 3, 2022Daniel Gouré, Ph.D.

For the second time in two years, U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) has awarded the massive Global Household Goods Contract (GHC) to one of three competing team, this one led by KBR and Tier One Relocation. The GHC contract will be a massive logistical undertaking since it is intended to coordinate and manage an average of 350,000 separate moves per year, 40 percent of which are outside the continental U.S. Given the importance of moving personal goods as well as the sheer scale of the undertaking, instead of relying on a single contractor team TRANSCOM should have awarded multiple contracts to reduce the risk of losses to military personnel and increased access to resources in order to meet expected demand for moving services. I have written more about this here.
