Russia Slow To Win Ukraine’s Airspace, Limiting War Gains (From The Associated Press)

March 1, 2022March 23, 2022Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

Lexington COO Loren Thompson was quoted in an Associate Press piece analyzing how Russia has gained relatively little control over Ukrainian airspace in recent weeks. An unexpected setback in its invasion, this is one of the most effective ways Ukrainian forces have derailed Moscow’s plan to dominate the country.

“There are two basic ways you can describe the slowness of the Russian advance in Ukraine,” Thompson commented. “One explanation is deliberate restraint. The other explanation is poor execution. We don’t know enough to identify which is the more plausible explanation, but it’s important to recognize the Russians have all sorts of options they have not yet brought to bear.” He added that this includes the “heavier use of cyberattacks against the Ukrainian command and control system and air defenses.”
