The electromagnetic spectrum has become a warfighting domain — a place where invisible enemies maneuver for advantage — and America may be losing the battle for dominance. At least, that’s what the Pentagon’s research chief said at the National Press Club last September. According to him, “we have lost the electromagnetic spectrum.” The situation probably isn’t quite that dire, but new threats are popping up all over the spectrum. And so are new opportunities, thanks to the advent of digital electronics. Which means for the foreseeable future, electronic warfare will be a core feature of modern combat. I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
