International Postal Update – December 2013 Canada Post plans to end door-to-door delivery service, cut its workforce, and raise stamp prices by 35 percent over the next five years. With these new measures, the postal operator aims to reverse annual losses of up to CAD 1 billion (940 million USD) by 2019 and avoid burdening taxpayers. The initiative to end door-to-door delivery is part of Canada Post’s "Five-point Action Plan." In addition the agency plans to open more postal franchises and utilize more automated mail processing equipment. The president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents 54,000 Canada Post employees, was highly critical of the plan, and vowed to “fight to protect the public service.”
