America First: What A Trump Defense Strategy Would Look Like (From Forbes)

August 30, 2016Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

Donald Trump is within hailing distance of a majority in the electoral college, so it is time to start taking seriously his policy pronouncements on subjects besides immigration and trade.  On defense, it is not hard to see what a President Trump would do.  First, he would establish a robust military presence on the southern border.  Second, he would rely less on allies.  Third, he would probably follow Obama in avoiding new Middle East entanglements.  Fourth, he would support Israel militarily under all foreseeable circumstances.  Fifth, he would spend more money on weapons.  Sixth, he would be more restrained than Obama in committing Washington to European security.  Finally, he would likely spend more money on regional and national missile defense.  I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
