After Afghanistan: Exelis Adapts Surveillance System For Use In Domestic Law Enforcement, Border Security (From Forbes)

July 14, 2014Loren B. Thompson, Ph.D

Defense contractor Exelis (XLS) is adapting technology first developed in the Air Force’s Gorgon Stare wide-area surveillance program for use in domestic law enforcement and border security. By shrinking the size of the sensor 80%, the company’s geospatial technology unit has fashioned an affordable system called CorvusEye 1500 that provides superior situational awareness. In addition to continuously streaming color video of an area the size Disneyworld, the system can also generate up to ten more tightly-focused views from different angles — views that can be monitored simultaneously by diverse users. CorvusEye 1500 archives the imagery it collects so that forensic investigations can be conducted to determine the origin of developments and the interactions among observed objects. There is also a ground station for quick processing and dissemination to users. This could change the way domestic law enforcement is conducted. I have written a commentary for Forbes here.
