Federal budget processes have become so complicated that most people can’t understand them. That helps explain why so much mis-information is floating around about the amount of money Washington spends on weapons. If you add all of the money allocated to design, engineering, testing and production of military technology, it totals $162 billion in 2014. That’s only 4.6% of the federal budget and less than 1% of the nation’s gross domestic product. It is also a fraction of the $400-500 billion that Americans spend each year on illegal drugs. I have written a commentary for Forbes putting weapons spending in perspective that you can read here.
